New Knowings

Episode details

Happy Monday! Welcome back to Acting Class Daily and Class Four of The Elysium Aesthetic. It’s the second week of the month, which means our focus is on our Artistry.

Acting talent lies in what we know (empathy) and how we believe (actor’s faith).

If we don’t know what we actually know …

If we don’t have access to our unique library of empathy …

Our personal paint of humanity …

Of the things we get about this world that we use to breathe life into text on a page …

Without access to our artistic palette, without knowing our poetic lens, what we’ll be left with is the type-casting mentality.

“I can do some things, sure … not anything, obviously.”

We’ve lived long enough with limitation.

We’ve lived long enough with internalizing what isn’t possible, what we can’t do.

We’ve lived long enough with doubt and disbelief ringing inside us.

What you know is a super-power, a professional separator, because it’s only yours.

It’s so huge. It’s so powerful. And it is so important.

So let’s push back. Let’s get to work knowing our talent, growing our talent, accessing and applying our talent.

Creating the echo inside you always:

I can do anything. Go on, try me.

Put It Up On The Wall!

We had a tradition of capturing quotes on the Elysium walls. The torch has now been passed to the digital realm. We’ll use this space to highlight quotes and translate those terms we tend to throw around.

Glossary Gigantum

THE TYPE-CASTING MENTALITY is the death knell of the actor. It sees you as a cliche. It’s blind to your abilities and potential. It binds you to chasing after other artist’s truths.

The type-casting mentality begins in life when someone says to us, “I wouldn’t believe you in that role.”

When that button gets pushed it creates doubt.

The sort of doubt we allow to attach and internalize.

It creates worry and in-security.

It forms a phrase echoing inside us …

“I can do some things, sure … not anything, obviously.”

We do the work to push back.

To know the full breadth of our talent.

To make ‘I can do anything” undeniable.

To change “I can’t play what I don’t know” into “I can do anything … because of what I know!”

Today’s Quote

'‘Sir Lancelot! Mr. Epic!”

Sample the ‘stacks.

In honor of our friends at The Sample (who knew the coolest newsletters to send me … and here we are today!) each Monday I’ll highlight a Substacker that’s tickling the tastebuds:

Play On.

Music to carry us into our break.
