Moment of Magic (bonus tastes)
Speaking of Henry Woronicz and how much I still needed to learn . . . 😉
As you know by now from Kindred Spirits, I was prone to coming just a few minutes late to class. Our story ended with me using Vicki’s contract to become the very best of something I had taken for granted.
And then I found myself at Utah Shakes surrounded by the coolest, fun-est actors I had ever come across. We were all living together, becoming fast friends, having the summer of our lives.
When performance came around there was a sizable early chunk of the play where me and my friend Justin had time to step away and chat before our next entrance (me racing in to deliver a note to Richard).
After a week of performances I began falling into a backstage rhythm. And took things for granted …
My heart jumped into my throat while laughing with Justin suddenly realizing I was a beat late … and would never make it on time. I raced to the entrance, grabbed the note and hurried into the awaiting Richard.
OOF.
Henry was my friend.
He didn’t have to tell me how irresponsible it was. How disappointed he felt.
I felt the similarity to that moment with Vicki and knew what I had to do. From that moment on I grabbed a chair and sat without budging right next to the entrance for the full 20 or so minutes between scenes.
Every time Henry passed backstage (still 3-4 scenes away from dealing with my character) he would always notice me focused and ready. But he never said anything. Eventually, my friend Justin joined me there and we both prepared in shared silence.
I’ll never forget the smile that came across Henry’s face when he saw the ricochet effect. That we both were there aiming to do something about who we want to be in this work.
Puzzle Pieces come from everywhere.
They inspire who you want to be.
And every once in a while they bring friends along for the ride.
Here’s a look at my legendary backstage dance from Richard III (inspired by having to wear that helmet!) and my backstage “brothers” (see what I did there) including my pal Justin on the far left.
